About VIGIL

VIGIL is a short fiction project that I, Chad Merritt, have created for the sake of simply presenting my short fiction to the world. You may have noticed no need to accept cookies, no advertisements, no requests for support, no offer of a newsletter subscription. In short, you may have noticed that there is nothing but some fiction and a few buttons.That's intentional; in fact, that's the only point of this website: to present my stories for you to read.And, despite the suggestion in its name, VIGIL is not a "vigil" for some cause, religious or otherwise. It is not a "vigil" for some literary standard I hold dear. It is not a "vigil" for anything--except for my stories. Because of this very limited scope and intention, it seemed logical, then, for me to present only my stories and nothing else. There is no uniting theme to these stories or political purpose for them; there is no method or goal of receiving payment; there isn't even marketing to appeal to this or that group of genre enthusiasts.The only thing uniting these stories is that I wrote them, they came from me, were conceived, written, and edited solely by me. They are here for their own sake and for the sake of having others simply read them. I've put aside the rest.To a small extent, perhaps, I suppose it is a vigil for something "greater": the simple process, one seemingly lost in the flood of extraneous material, of a writer writing his story, and a reader reading it. But I don't view that as the greater cause. The stories are here for their own sake. My vigil is for them.It'd just be a nice bonus if you read them and agreed that they deserved such a thing.
